Icebreaker was founded in 1995 by New Zealander Jeremy Moon. Icebreaker products are made from Merino wool. Jeremy discovered the wool when he was traveling in New Zealand and someone showed him the wool. He liked the fabric so much that he launched the 'icebreaker' brand.

The Merino wool, from which the products are made, comes from Merino sheep. This wool has a number of advantages. It is soft, does not itch, is warm in the cold and cool in the heat, it breathes and does not smell.

The Merino sheep are one of the oldest sheep breeds in the world. The sheep is known for its high quality wool. The sheep mainly live in New Zealand. Thanks to the many folds of the skin, one sheep produces up to five kilos of wool per year. The quality of the wool is so good because in a Merino sheep almost ten times as many hairs grow per square centimeter than in other sheep species. As a result, the wool has a very fine structure that does not itch.

Due to the harsh weather conditions in New Zealand, the sheep has been able to adapt to hot and cold temperatures.
